Overview
Routing Engineer is a lead-level, non-union position responsible for driving analytics, process improvement, and routing optimization within the company’s distribution network. This role focuses on the strategic design, testing, and refinement of routing workflows across all delivery operations to maximize efficiency and service levels. Acting as the technical expert for route management platforms, the Routing Engineer manages routing software configurations and leads key routing initiatives. The position serves as the primary liaison for driver feedback and champions change management efforts to ensure smooth adoption of routing improvements. This role works cross-functionally with Operations, Customer Service, IT, and Fleet Management teams, and interfaces with both union and non-union personnel, without direct supervisory authority. The Routing Engineer reports directly to the Director of Transportation and is expected to influence and guide routing strategy through expertise and collaboration rather than formal management of staff.
Responsibilities
Routing Strategy and Network Optimization
• Design, test, and refine efficient routing workflows across the distribution network to improve delivery performance, cost efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
• Analyze route plans and performance metrics (e.g. on-time delivery, route miles, cost-per-stop) to identify opportunities for optimization.
• Develop and implement customized routes for various scenarios (such as peak seasons, new service areas, or changing customer requirements).
• Coordinate with operations management to ensure routing strategies align with business goals, capacity constraints, and service level agreements.
• Continuously monitor route efficiency and adjust plans proactively to address bottlenecks or improve productivity.
Routing Software and Technology Management
•
Serve as the technical point of contact and subject matter expert for the company’s routing and logistics software (Omnitracs Roadnet and related tools).
• Manage routing software configurations, parameters, and data settings to accurately reflect operational needs and constraints (e.g. delivery windows, driver shift rules, vehicle capacities).
• Ensure data integrity in routing systems by maintaining up-to-date customer information, geofences, and route settings. · Troubleshoot and resolve routing system issues in coordination with IT and the software vendor, minimizing disruption to operations.
• Lead the testing and implementation of software updates or new routing technologies, including conducting user testing, evaluating results, and rolling out enhancements.
• Provide training or guidance to dispatchers and team members on effective use of routing tools and new features.
Analytics and Continuous Improvement Initiatives
•
Leverage data analytics to drive continuous improvement in route planning and logistics operations.
• Analyze delivery data, routing performance reports, and KPI trends to pinpoint inefficiencies, cost drivers, and service gaps.
• Develop insightful reports and visualizations to communicate findings and recommendations to stakeholders.
• Lead or participate in cross-functional projects aimed at improving route efficiency, reducing transportation costs, and enhancing operational processes (e.g. optimizing delivery schedules, reducing mileage, improving driver productivity).
• Champion a culture of continuous improvement by applying methodologies such as Lean or Six Sigma to identify process bottlenecks and implement solutions. (An interest or certification in Six Sigma or other process improvement methodology is preferred, though not required.)
• Stay abreast of best practices and emerging technologies in logistics and route optimization, applying this knowledge to keep the company’s routing strategies at the forefront of efficiency and innovation.
Cross Functional Collaboration
•
Work closely with various departments and stakeholders to ensure routing operations are integrated and aligned with broader organizational objectives.
• Collaborate with Operations and Transportation managers to synchronize routing plans with daily operational needs and customer delivery requirements.
• Partner with the IT department on system integrations, data feeds, and technology upgrades that impact routing (for example, integrating telematics or GPS data from fleet vehicles into routing decisions).
• Coordinate with the Fleet Maintenance team to account for vehicle availability, capacities, and maintenance schedules in route planning.
• Engage with management to ensure routing plans and changes are in compliance with union agreements and to address any workforce considerations (union or non-union) in implementing routing changes.
• Act as a liaison across these groups, facilitating communication and problem-solving, and leading routing-related initiatives that require input or action from multiple departments.
• Through effective collaboration, ensure that routing optimizations are supported company-wide and that any changes are implemented smoothly without silos.
Driver Engagement and Change Management
• Serve as the lead liaison to the driver workforce regarding routing processes and improvements.
• Establish regular feedback loops with drivers, driver helpers, and dispatch personnel to gather input on route plans, delivery experiences, and safety or efficiency concerns.
• Conduct driver meetings or one-on-one discussions (e.g. debriefs or “ride-alongs”) to understand on-the-road challenges and incorporate frontline feedback into routing adjustments.
• Use this feedback to refine route sequencing, addresses, stop assignments, or other workflow elements, ensuring that plans are practical and driver-friendly.
• Lead change management efforts for any new routing policies or technology updates: clearly communicate upcoming changes to drivers and operations teams, provide training or instructional materials as needed, and address questions or resistance empathetically.
• Champion a positive adoption of routing improvements by highlighting benefits (such as shorter drive times, balanced workloads, improved customer service) and by being available as the go-to technical support for routing questions.
• Through proactive engagement and effective communication, ensure that changes in routing strategy are understood and embraced by the frontline teams, resulting in sustained improvements and minimal disruption.
